Accelerating the Transition Here in Bow Valley
At HSS Design Build, we believe that the most sustainable course of action for the construction industry is to prioritize retrofitting the existing housing inventory. By upgrading what we already have, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions, eliminate reliance on fossil fuels, and create healthier, more resilient homes for the future.
“80% of the buildings that will still be standing in 2050 have already been built” (The Climate Group, 2022). This powerful statistic highlights a significant truth: retrofitting existing buildings is one of the most effective tools we have for combating climate change and achieving our 2050 emissions reduction targets.
One of our recent projects exemplifies what’s possible: we transformed a small duplex into an energy-efficient dwelling that is now fully disconnected from gas! This bold move demonstrates that retrofitting is achievable—even in harsh climates like Bow Valley, where temperatures can plummet to -30°C.
New Windows and Doors by Innotech in the most recent project in Canmore, Alberta
Key Upgrades for a Sustainable Future - here’s how we did it!
High-Performance Windows (Innotech Defender 76TS)
We installed triple-glazed Innotech Defender 76TS windows, designed to withstand extreme climates. These high-performance windows drastically reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency, and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round.
Air-to-Air Heat Pump (GREE Unix 3-Ton)
The GREE Unix heat pump was chosen for its ability to deliver powerful heating even in sub-zero temperatures. This system efficiently warms the home by extracting heat from the outdoor air, proving that sustainable heating solutions are possible even in extreme climates.
Heat Recovery Ventilator (VanEE HRV)
A VanEE HRV ensures a healthier, cleaner, and more comfortable indoor environment by continuously replacing stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. It also transfers heat between supply and exhaust air streams, reducing the need for additional heating or cooling while improving air quality and energy efficiency.
Enhanced Insulation (Cellulose)
To improve thermal performance, we added cellulose insulation in the attic, increasing the R-value by 20 to a total of R48. This upgrade minimizes thermal bridging, stabilizes indoor temperatures, and significantly reduces heat loss.
Electric Hot Water Tank
To replace the existing gas-powered water heater, we installed a high-efficiency electric hot water tank. This upgrade not only provides reliable hot water but also eliminates the home's reliance on fossil fuels and significantly reduces its carbon footprint.
Comprehensive Energy System Improvements
Retrofitting isn’t just about isolated upgrades—it’s about optimizing the entire energy system. By addressing insulation, airtightness, ventilation, and renewable energy integration, we achieved a drastic reduction in the home’s overall energy use.
Solar Ready
This house is designed to go even further and achieve even greater performance whenever its owners are ready! By making it solar-ready, we’ve ensured that the home is prepared for future solar panel installation. This means the house can generate its own clean energy, further reducing its carbon footprint and becoming even more self-sufficient.
Why Retrofitting Matters?
Retrofitting is about more than just reducing emissions—it’s about creating a future-ready built environment. By addressing energy inefficiencies and transitioning to renewable solutions, we can:
Combat Climate Change: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet critical global climate targets.
Improve Quality of Life: Create healthier, more comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing homes.
Strengthen Community Resilience: Reduce energy dependency and protect against rising energy costs.
At HSS Design Build, we’re committed to leading this transition in the Bow Valley. By collaborating with homeowners, local organizations, and industry leaders, we aim to inspire and accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices. Together, we can build a better future—starting with the homes we already live in.
