Banff recreation grounds, pavilion building renamed!
The Pavilion is once again in the spotlight in the Rocky Mountain Outlook, this time for a very special reason—it has been given a meaningful new name. Banff Town Council has made it a priority to incorporate Indigenous languages and names into the naming process. On November 25, the council unanimously approved the renaming of the recreation grounds to Sundance Park and the pavilion to Okâch (Welcome) – Îyethkabi Oûgitûbi (Staging Area to the Mountains).

The name was chosen after an extensive consultation process with the Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda First Nation. The Stoney Tribal Administration facilitated internal discussions, engaging officers and Elders from the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney First Nations to guide this meaningful decision.

The Town is collaborating with a video and recording expert from Mînî Thnî to create a video and audio recordings that will be showcased online and accessible through QR codes in the pavilion. Elders will assist with pronunciation and share stories.
We could not imagine a more beautiful and welcoming name for the project we’ve been honored to be part of.
