HERITAGE BANFF BACKYARD CABIN
High Performance Meets Heritage Preservation
Hoggard Cabin was originally built in 1931 and is listed on the Town of Banff Municipal Heritage Inventory. Its new life will be as a bed and breakfast for the family that lives in the main residence. Long left vacant, this 25m2 cabin will once again become usable space to welcome visitors to the park, and leave room for future ADU development plans on the property. Hoggard Cabin showcases how heritage and sustainability can complement each other. In retrofitting the cabin, the exterior shell and heritage features were preserved, but new foundation and structural walls and roof were constructed.
One of the most exciting moments of this build came when the cabin was rolled off of its existing foundation and replaced once the new foundation had been poured, allowing the original walls to remain intact while the foundation was being replaced. The original walls and new structural shell were insulated with hemp wool insulation, the roof is recycled rubber shake, much of the exterior cladding is reclaimed from the original, and windows have been replaced with triple glazed wood windows matching the original style. The cabin also features an HRV and is furnished on the interior with fir T&G with the original rafters integrated to celebrate the building’s rustic origins.
